Bob Newman grew up in America during the time of the Beatles, the moon race, JFK, Martin Luther King, and the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season. Great parents, a good public school system, and a neighborhood where all the grown-ups acted like surrogate parents for the kids, all contributed to his success as a self-made millionaire.
But the single most important factor in his personal and business success, Bob says, has been setting goals for his life. His first major goal was to get accepted at the University of Florida. His second was to graduate, even as he watched friends and classmates drop out and flunk out. At that time he didn’t (or couldn’t) understand the power of setting (small)goals, and then reaching for bigger ones.
He set his goal to graduate without really thinking about getting a good, rewarding, high-paying job after that. As a C student, he wasn’t recruited to work at a large corporation.
So he drifted from job to job. He started in banking, where he built a reputation for always doing his absolute best. From his fraternity days, he knew the power of networking and relationships, and would play racquetball with the bank’s security director.
When Bob started looking for a different career, the security director had no problem recommending him for a job with a local electronic security contractor.
The A students may be the ones who are recruited, but it’s the C students who are the risk-takers and entrepreneurs. Eventually Bob started his own security business, which he sold in 2005 for over $30 million. Bob started to understand the concepts of P+O+W+E+R and how to unleash them.
Based on his personal journey, Bob believed there might be another force in the universe. It was the power of a determined person. It is the energy of the twelfth man, the force of willpower, the power of focus. Bob realized that learning to develop or unleash this power was the main contributing factor to his success.
Bob laughed when The Secret became a worldwide phenomenon. Bob believes there is no secret to success; it’s all about developing personal power through setting goals and working hard.
Change Through Power is Bob’s way to share the guiding principles that helped him become successful.
